SIP Trunking (Session Initiation Protocol ) is a method where business phone systems can operate using an internet connection instead of a traditional phone line. SIP trunking is provided by SIP providers, which are similar to traditional phone companies, except SIP providers give access to phone lines on the internet from the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). The term “trunking” can find its origins back in the original days of telephone service. A trunk was a communication path for a large number of telephone users that they all shared. SIP is one of the specific protocols that enable VoIP services to work. A traditional phone uses physical lines and circuits to connect to the telephone network, a SIP trunk replaces these connections with virtual connections through your existing IP networks. Because information is transmitted digitally and not through telephone lines, SIP combines voice, video data , and internet services into one single line.
Since the invention of VoIP and PBX, voice communications have no longer been restricted to traditional circuits and landline phones. Instead through SIP, we now have a signaling language designed to carry voice, video and instant messaging and we can utilize the internet to cut down on the cost and limitations of older phone systems.
All VoIP & SIP calls are local calls no matter where you are calling and you don’t even need a phone line. Most business VoIP providers offer SIP Services for both small and large applications, and offer a cheap way for small businesses to maintain there professional presence – and for large companies to maintain any local presence.
SIP trunking sends all of your telephone text and video Communications over a network IP instead of routing voice calls over copper lines and dedicated circuit-switched networks, SIP trunking involves sending the voice calls over data networks such as the Internet. Through a SIP trunk, VoIP users can make calls to any phone without telephone lines by connecting to a compatible hosted PBX system.
You need three necessary elements to operate a SIP trunk the SIP Provider for the services, a phone system that can enable SIP, and a border element to make the connection between your network and the PSTN or an external IP carrier network. These border elements can be a firewall or switch, and are usually managed by your SIP Trunking provider. With only these three simple elements any business can vastly boost its telecommunications reach.
Using SIP allows small businesses to easily appear large and professional with a level of service often reserved for more expensive solutions. This also makes it easier for a large business to maintain their local presence, as all SIP and VoIP calls are local calls – customers don’t have to dial a generic call center number. There are of course more benefits and advantages.
By using SIP trunking companies can avoid the fees and hassles associated with older phone services. Older services required the purchase of a new trunk that included at minimum, 24 additional lines. You may have only needed just one additional line, but you had to purchase an entire trunk – now you spent more money on 23 useless lines. One of SIP trunking’s greatest features is its scalability, it will grow seamlessly with your business, or even shrink if your needs change.
Because SIP trunking combines video, data and voice all into one single line, your local, long distance, broadband internet service, and even video calls are all handled through one network. With the right bandwidth allocation, you can ensure the necessary resources are available for standard internet use, while maintaining a consistent call volume and quality.
Now with every service on the same network, the necessary hardware you need on site is significantly less. Gone are the days where you need in house IT managers just to stay on top of your phone lines, with Sip technology nothing is on-site. Your provider sets up a SIP proxy server to route incoming, outgoing and PBX calls and they even take care of all technical support to cut down on costs and repairs.
Service outages should never happen again with SIP trunking. If one location shuts down temporarily, SIP trunks will automatically reroute calls to other locations and extensions to at least partially restore services. If there is an unexpected power outage, calls can be rerouted to a separate satellite office. Companies that work internationally, or if they are considering outsourcing, they can take advantage of this benefit. The flexibility of SIP trunking allows you to spread staff across the country or even the world.
By sending all of your data over one single connection, it doesn’t take much to start saving money with a SIP trunk. In addition to providing businesses with substantial cost savings by eliminating the need for expensive PRIs, and local PTSN gateways. SIP trunks alone are more than 25% cheaper than PRI trunks, and that’s before calling rates. SIP even allows you to make free voice calls between any offices on the same VoIP system. SIP is also extremely flexible and easily capable of scaling to meet the growing demands of companies large and small. PRI Trunking is quickly becoming the outdated service. Whereas PRI trunking can fail in adverse weather, SIP services ensures you will stay connected and reroutes calls as necessary. As an internet-based replacement for traditional phone service, SIP is a central part of how VoIP works and allows for a more robust, and flexible communications system.
Once you’ve decided SIP trunking is the right service for your business, the most important step is to then choose which SIP provider best fits your needs.
